BANGKOK — An Australian man was in critical condition in southern Thailand yesterday after swallowing dozens of condoms packed with hashish, some of which burst inside his stomach, police said.

John Paul Jones, 51, will be charged with drug trafficking when his condition improves, police said. The offence carries a maximum prison term of 20 years.

Friends took Jones to hospital after he had been complaining of severe stomach pain.
